Raise your vibration

Good vibes

When I first heard people talking about “good vibes” and “bad vibes,” I thought it was a figure of speech. It was a figure of speech, but it was also something real that I didn’t know about.

The key point: everything is energy, and energy has different frequencies

We know that different sounds – higher or lower; louder or quieter – have different frequencies of sound waves. We also know that different colours and intensities of light have different frequencies of light waves.

It was news to me when I first heard that each of us human beings operates at a certain “frequency,” depending at least in part on our emotional and mental state.

I first encountered this concept in David Hawkins’ book “Power vs. Force.” Hawkins developed a “Map of the Scale of Consciousness.”

You’ve probably already encountered this, but in case you haven’t, here’s my lay person’s understanding.

Imagine you had a scale from 1 to 1,000. At the bottom are low-vibration emotions and thoughts. At the top are high-vibration emotions and thoughts.

In Hawkins’ scale, shame is the lowest vibration – 20 on a scale from 1 to 1,000. Other low-vibration states are guilt, fear and anger. At higher vibrations are states like acceptance, love and peace.

Of course, our state of being goes up and down. Different aspects of our life may be at different levels of frequency. But we will have an over-all average frequency.

AND – this began to haunt me as I learned more about it: Our state of being can impact the world around us.

At about the level of 200, something changes. When we are in a state of being that’s below 200 – emotional/mental states like shame, guilt, fear or anger – we take more out of the environment than we contribute back to the environment. When we are in a higher vibration emotional/mental state – like acceptance, love, joy or peace – we contribute more to the environment than we take out.

And that matters because…

When I was exposed to these concepts, I began to feel more responsible for my state of being. I realized that how I feel and think affects not only me, but those around me – because of my energy field, not just what I might say or do.

If our thoughts and feelings create a high-vibration or low-vibration energy field that impacts the world around us, it would be good if we noticed whether our energy field is higher or lower vibration, right?

So, how do we keep our energy field at a decently high vibration? How do we raise our vibration so that, at a minimum, we do not bring down the energy around us?

5 ways to raise your vibration

The over-arching principle is this: anything that makes you feel happy lifts your energy – literally! As Alison Fisher recently said, “The best way to save the world is to be happy.”

1. Be grateful. Appreciation is high-vibration. Anytime you are thankful, it raises your vibration.

My favourite “gratitude” resource is Ronda Byrne’s book “The Magic.” She has a 28-day gratitude practice. You begin each day by writing 10 things you’re grateful for, then reading the list out loud. At the end of each day, the last thing before you fall asleep, you think, “What was the best thing about this day? What did I most appreciate about this day?”

2. Laugh. Any time you laugh, it raises your vibration. In a book called, “Anatomy of an Illness,” Norman Cousins describes how he laughed his way to good health.

3. Play with David Hawkins’ Scale. Play around with David Hawkins’ scale. If you know you’re feeling less than optimum – those lower-level emotions like shame, guilt, fear or anger – see if you can shift to higher states – like acceptance, affection, joy or peace. Your emotional and mental state doesn’t have to be about anything. Just see if you can re-capture the physical and emotional sensations of those higher-vibration states.

4. Move. Any physical movement helps to raise your vibration. Bend and stretch. Jump up and down. Wave your arms. Moving raises your vibration.

5. Go outside. If you possibly can, get outdoors. If you are able to be someplace in nature, that’s even better. But just getting outdoors, even for a few minutes, will lift your energy field.

And we’re all still human

I did not miss the irony. On the day when I was preparing to create a video about how to raise your vibration, I was more grumpy and negative than I have been for a very long time. I had to take my own advice to shake myself out of it.

Fortunately, the advice worked. By the time I did one or two of the activities above, I was more cheerful – practically fit for being in public!
